Pair Tall Vintage/Antique Chinese Red Cinnabar Vases. 10.5 Early 20th century
Two hand carved cinnabar lacquer vases 10.5 high. Lacquer carving was invented in China many centuries ago. Cinnabar (the mineral that was used as the most popular red pigment) became so identified with the carved lacquer that it gave its name to the products. Lacquer is made from the sap of certain trees that dries hard and waterproof when exposed to air. Many layers of the lacquer are applied to a wood or metal base, allowing a day to dry between coats. As many as 200 coats may be used. The resulting thick layer of lacquer is then carved by experts to create the 3-D works of art. Deeply carved floral scenes, all hand carved. This is a great pair - 10.5" tall, 5.25" diameter. The item "Pair Tall Vintage/Antique Chinese Red Cinnabar Vases. 10.5 Early 20th century" is in sale since Saturday, September 12, 2020.
